About our Firm

Background

The Firm was founded in Cleveland, Ohio as a sole proprietorship in 1938 by Walter B. Stone. Lewis B. Frauenthal joined the firm in 1956, shortly thereafter became a partner, and then managing partner. Steven H. Newman joined the Firm in 1983 and in 1985 became a shareholder. For over thirty years the Firm’s office was located on Euclid Avenue at East 18th Street. In June of 1988 the Firm moved to expanded, refurbished quarters in the Park Plaza building on Chester Avenue and remained there until 2002. In December of 2002, the Firm moved to their current location on the tenth floor of the Ohio Savings Plaza building on East Ninth Street.

In May of 2005, after nearly 50 years of professional practice, Mr. Frauenthal retired from the firm and the accounting profession. Steven H. Newman is now the 100% shareholder and President of the firm. Including Steve, the firm consists of ten employees, which includes six certified public accountants, an accountant/administrator, a staff accountant, a director of development and a secretary/receptionist. The professional staff is trained to work in tax, accounting, management services, business valuations, and consulting; however, some have advanced training in some areas of service provided.

Newman & Company, CPAs provides a full range of services that include: accounting, tax planning and compliance, personal financial advice, business planning, business valuations, litigation support, and cost segregation studies.

When the firm started, its philosophy was to provide comprehensive and personalized service. The firm has operated under different ownership over the years; however, its basic philosophy has remained the same: to provide quality accounting and personal attention to small and medium size businesses, the backbone of the American economy. Newman & Company, CPAs has established a firm capable of providing a full range of public accounting services to clients who benefit from its employees’ expertise, quality of work, and commitment to success.

Steven H. Newman, CPA, CVA

Steven H. Newman is the Managing Shareholder and President of Newman & Company, CPAs. He joined the firm in 1983 as an Accounting Manager and became a Shareholder in 1985. Prior to joining Newman & Company, CPAs, Steve was a senior internal auditor and accounting manager for the Diamond Shamrock Corporation. A native Clevelander, Steve received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting, Magna Cum Laude from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, in 1979.

In addition to being a CPA, Steve received his certification as a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) in 1998. As a CVA, Mr. Newman values businesses for sales acquisitions, estate and gift tax planning, divorce and other litigation matters. Steve is a member of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), the Ohio Society of CPAs (OSCPA), the Tax Club of Cleveland, and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA).

As an active member of the Northeast Ohio Apartment Association, he also serves clients as a consultant in real estate and other tax matters. Mr. Newman is very active in community service projects and organizations. He is the past Treasurer of the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland, and is currently serving on the finance committee. Steve is a board member of the ALS Association – Lou Gehrig’s disease, Northern Ohio Chapter and Board Member and Treasurer of Temple Israel Ner Tamid. He is the host of the radio show “Financial Opportunities” airing on WCLV 104.9 FM on Sunday mornings. Steve served on the South Euclid-Lyndhurst finance advisory committee and was the Treasurer for the school system’s levy campaign. In addition, he enjoys volunteering for Habitat for Humanity.

Louis Marn, CPA

Louis Marn is the Tax Manager for Newman & Company, CPAs. He joined the firm in 1991. Prior to joining Newman & Company, CPAs, Lou was a Tax Manager with Price Waterhouse Coopers in Akron, Ohio and a Tax Supervisor with Ernst & Young in Dayton, Ohio. He also served as a Corporate Tax Field Agent with the Internal Revenue Service. Lou received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting, graduating with honors and attended the Masters in Business Administration Program at Wright State University.

Mr. Marn has almost 30 years of public accounting experience covering all aspects of corporate and individual taxation. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), the Ohio Society of CPAs (OSCPA), and the Construction Employers Association.

Vicki McClintock is the Accounting Manager of Newman & Company, CPAs. She joined the firm in 1983 as a keypuncher/bookkeeper. Since joining the firm she has earned her Bachelors of Science in Accounting from Myers University in 1988 and obtained her Certified Public Accountant license in 1989.

Darlene Groves is an Accountant and Office Manager for Newman & Company, CPAs. She joined the firm in 1995. Pamela S. Payton, CPA

Pam Payton is a Staff Accountant for Newman & Company, CPAs. She rejoined the firm in February 2006 having worked here previously from May 1987 through 1995. In the interim, she worked in both public and corporate environments. In addition, she obtained a background in Human Resources and functioned in this additional role for sometime. Pam received her Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio, in December 1986.

Pam is a member of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), the Ohio Society of CPAs (OSCPA), the Society for Human Resource Managers (SHRM), Beta Alpha Psi (Accounting Honorary) and Beta Gamma Sigma (Business Honorary).

She is on the Advisory Board for the Diocese of Cleveland Catholic Campaign for Human Development and serves as Lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Ambrose Parish. Due to her younger sister, Lynn, being specially challenged, she has served as a board member of her sister’s Special Olympic group, worked with the athletes, and acted as their accountant for a few years.

Julie A. Groves

Julie A. Groves is a staff accountant with Newman & Company, CPAs. She joined the firm in August 2006. Prior to joining Newman & Company, CPAs, Julie was a Staff Accountant with Mastercraft and Tyre in Mesa, Arizona and a Billing Coordinator with Brett Linden Lawn Maintenance in Avon, Ohio. Julie received her Bachelor of Science in Business majoring in Accounting and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, both in 2003. She also participated in Miami’s Capstone in Strategic Management course. This is an intense course on managing a company while competing with others in the class to see who could make the largest profit. The team she was on won this competition.

Sheldon M. Lewin, CPA

Sheldon M. Lewin is a part-time accountant and tax preparer at Newman & Company, CPAs with over 50 years experience working in public accounting. He joined the firm in late November 2007 and brings a wealth of knowledge in many types of businesses. Sheldon has experience in accounting, auditing, taxes, retirement plans and business consulting. Past clients were concentrated in wholesale business, service companies, and real estate and were from small to large in overall size of operation.

Prior to joining Newman & Company, CPAs, Sheldon was a partner with CBIZ Accounting, Tax & Advisory Services from November 1999 to December 2006; he was a Partner in Baden & Linden, PLL, which was acquired by CBIZ, from December 1959 to November 1999. He started his public accounting career with Stromberg & Associates and was with them from March 1958 to December 1959.

Sheldon graduated Magna Cum Laude from Western Reserve University in June 1957 with a Bachelors of Business Administration in Accounting. He served as president of the University’s chapter of Beta Alpha Psi and was also a member of several honorary societies. He is currently a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Ohio Society of CPAs. Sheldon was an active participant in the Cleveland Chapter of the Ohio Society Downtown Practitioner’s Group and has given talks on taxation to them and to several non-profit organizations. He is currently a board member and treasurer of the Historic Warehouse District of Cleveland and has been involved with several non-profit organizations.

Thomas M. Woisnet, CPA

Tom Woisnet is a unique member of Newman & Company, CPAs. He is a twenty-five year veteran of the Cleveland Fire Department and a degreed accountant and CPA. Besides serving the department, he pursues an interest in accounting on a part-time basis working for the firm. Tom worked for the firm as a part-time accountant in the 1990’s and recently rejoined the firm in February 2006. During the busy season, he is able to help complete the various tax returns that are due and helps in many ways throughout the year.

Tom’s family consists of his wife, two daughters and a dog. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf (a lot).

Karen Temple

Karen Temple is employed as the Director of Development for Newman & Company, CPAs. She joined the firm in February 2008 and has worked in the field of marketing and graphic design since 1988. She also has a side business that she started in 1999 called Karen’s Cheesecakes that sells gourmet cheesecakes and has over one hundred regular customers.

Prior to joining Newman & Company, CPAs, Karen worked in various industries and companies in a marketing capacity. Some of her responsibilities and tasks were making sales calls, setting appointments with follow-ups to contacts and as a designer in their graphic arts departments.

Karen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree concentrating in Graphic Design from Kent State University. She also received an Associates of Liberal Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati.

Elizabeth Steptau

Elizabeth Steptau is the Receptionist and Administrative Assistant of Newman & Company, CPAs. She recently joined the firm in September 2006. Before joining the team at Newman & Company, CPAs, Liz managed a pharmacy as well as being its top pharmacy technician. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she relocated to Cleveland in 2006.
